Having been debugged by one of your geeks I have installed the following under advice:

Zonealarm, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spywareguard, SuperAntiSpyware, et al...

I have chucked IE6 in favour of firefox. I need Java but can't get it - the following happens:

Windows Installer connects with the internet after asking permission.
Install Wizard installs up to
"Applying Java patches" and I then get the following message

bin\java-mri.exe: Old File not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match.

When you okay that you get

Java™ Update fails to apply changes to your system

After that you get

Error 1722. There is a problem with this windows installer package. a program run as part of the set up did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor

Okay that and the install rolls back.

I have tried manual and automatic downloads online and offline and to different directories with the same result. I have also uninstalled Java and reinstalled.

If you enabled SpyBot's TeaTimer is may be preventing the install. SpywareGuard can also prevent downloads. These programs are designed to stop installations to protect your PC. Disable them, complete your downloads and installations. When finished re-enable the protection of these programs.

Disable TeaTimer;
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active" box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
Disable SpywareGuard;

Double-click the red SG in your system try to open Spywareguard
  • Click Option on the left
  • Uncheck the following
    • Enable Real-Time Scanning
    • Enable Download Protection
    • Enable Browser HiJack Protection
  • Click Save Settings

I've always had problems with the java installer and ended up downloading the whole package and running the installation from it. Even on systems that don't have any kind of blocker or firewall.

Tea Timer was not selected and SG was closed. Still did not work.

Any other suggestions?

Cheers
