All patches show up to date and have done SFC recently...
Anyone know what this is? Am I likely looking at malware or a windows problem?

MAY have fixed it.
Major try 1
changed Data Execution Prevention to "for all services" then added Spooler as exception.
cleaned old printer files out (Dell 1600 series)
Cclean registry

Major try 2
SFC + reinstall of print (hp 2605 and dell 1815) drivers (no noticable help)

Major try3+
adobe accrobat 8 trial version repair + Defrag + SFC (no errors on boot now and spooler service seems to keep running) I've only got 1-2 hours testing after that fix....

I had many minor trys.... any one of which could have helped... spent MANY hours on this...but major try 3 seemes to have fixed it. I'll update in a few days after some more testing.

I did repair install and now it's been working. I was hoping to find a ...less aggressive fix, but no dice on this one. Spent HOURS working it.

To those who follow... if you spend more than and hour or 2 on fixing an issue like this...just go to repair install.

Check out this Link on how to clean up printer drivers, which is a major cause of the spooler service having errors.

Jaxisland, thanks.
I did run across this in my searches but it did not fix my issue.

I fought with this for a long time. it was a third priority type of thing I got to spend time on it, try a fix, research some more try another fix... from MAY till 1-2 weeks ago when I did the repair install.

I just found out how to map the DLL's for auto updates so I may (in the next 1-2 days) be DONE with this totally. I have 70+ updates to do that all failed but just used the reg DLL's trick on another machine (recent repair install) and the updates went smooth...

The DLL and reset in combinition worked. I can now use automatic updates. Here's what I did. I pasted this

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

into a CMD window then pasted this

net stop "Automatic Updates"
del /f /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\*.*
net start "Automatic Updates"
wuauclt.exe /detectnow

and Automatic updates started working.

To recap the ONLY fix that helped with the print spooler issue was a Repair install of XP. When that was done my automatic updates didn't work so I took the steps above to fix that issue.

Machine is good now. I HEAVILY relied on posts in GTG site for auto-update fix.
