Hi,
I had been using my computer (a HP desktop, about six years old) then left it for a few hours. It went onto standby but when I went back to use it a few hours later, it wouldn't start, it just beeps - nothing will come up on the screen. I have held the button in to turn it off and on a couple of times, but it just starts beepting the second it is turned on. Sorry this is so simplistic, problems are right out of my area! I will answer any questions I can to fill in the blanks. Is there anything i cn do to "reset" it or is it time to call the paramedics...?

If it beeps more than the usual one short beep it means some vital piece of hardware has failed. The number of beeps and length of the beeps (like morse code) tells you what component has failed or needs checking. There are tables to translate those beeps here (you need to know what make of BIOS your PC has. most are made by Award or AMI):

Hi,
Thank you for that info. It is beeping for about 8 seconds, then 4 seconds silence then 8 again. According to that site it could mean RAM problem. I guess I will just have to get someone in and see if it's salvageable or not. Thanks again for your help.
