Hi,

I have just ungraded my PC and as part of this I did a clean install of my operating system (Win98SE) and all software, since this upgrade I now suffer from the following internet problem.

I can connect to my broadband ISP OK, but while brousing the internet (using MS Internet Exploper 6) the connection seems to freeze for 30 to 60 seconds and then continues OK. This happens randomly but on average it occurs about every 4 or 5 minutes. It is only the internet connection that seems to be the problem (no data transfer occurs between my PC and the internet) as I can open other applications OK including other IE windows (although they also remain blank), once 30 to 60s has passed the internet connection comes back to life and all the IE windows load up the require web pages.

I have installed the most up to date drivers for my modem and according to the Device Manager it is working correctly.

System Info:
Motherboard - ASUS A7V8X-X.
CPU - AMD XP 2600.
RAM - 512Mb.
Graphics - Gainward Geforce FX 5200 Pro/680 TV/DVI.
Hard drives - Master = 120Gb, Slave = 20Gb.
DVD drive - Master = DVD-ROM, Slave = DVD-RW.
Broadband Internet Connection - 512Kbps via USB Speedtouch 330 modem

I have followed the instructions of this forum and completed spyware & virus checks but the problem remains, therefore I have included a HijackThis log below.

I would be grateful for any help provided. Thanks Richard.

Hello richfish and welcome to the GTG forums. It appears that your HijackThis log is missing some of the information. We need a complete HijackThis (HJT) log file to be able to analyze what is happening on your computer. If you do not have a copy of HijackThis or do not have the latest version (1.99.1) then download it from here: HijackThis_sfx.exe. Double-click on the file you just downloaded and click on the UnZip button to install the program. It will be installed to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ directory by default.

Start HijackThis and click the Do a system scan and save a log button to perform a scan and create a log file. When the scan is complete, Notepad will open up with the log file in it. While in Notepad, press Ctrl-A to select all text and then Ctrl-C to copy the text to the clipboard.

POST the log in this thread using the Add Reply button. Click in the data-entry window and press Ctrl-V to paste the log into the window. Add any other comments which you believe might be helpful in our analysis. and click the Add Reply button.

I will review your log when it comes in.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL I CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

I have also noticed that the warning sound/beep and picture are no longer in sync. This applies if I'm on the internet or not. When I click an object that has a sound associated with it (e.g. an OK button) the screen reacts straight away but the sound or beep occurs a second or 2 afterwards. This does not happen all the time so it may be that the PC is very busy as I can quite often have multiple windows open at once.

If you need any more info please let me know.

Thanks for your help.

Hi richfish. After reviewing your log I see no signs of viruses or malware at this time. Your log is clean. What I would suggest at this point is to get a copy of Another Task Manager and keep it running. When your slowdown occurs look at the ATM screen and see what process is utilizing the cpu the most. This will tell us what application might be misbehaving and then we can work on a solution.

Report back with what you find.

Cheers.
