when i boot up, there is an ican representing windows security alerts in the taskbar that shoots up a small popup window.
id like to remove the startup popup and the icon there, while leaving the program running.
however, if that program is not very important i dont mind canning it.
im running xp sp2.

You can control the alerts without shutting down the Security Center. Use the Control Panel to open the Security Center. Notice on the left the words: "Change the way Security Center alerts me." Clicking that will offer options to control which alerts are presented to you.
