I have 3 computers, one PC and two laptops. Every time I tried
to get online using my broadband(DSL) connection, I kept getting the
message "Page cannot be displayed". When I click Refresh, I am able
to see the page and get online. I ran Spysubtract (intermute.com)
and Trojan.se appeared on all 3 computers. I clicked to clean it and
while doing so SpySubtract froze. I re-ran SpySubtract but nothing
showed up. I ran McAfee anti-virus (part of McAfee Security Suite 6.0),
nothing. I ran McAfee Anti-Spyware,nothing. I installed and ran the
programs listed on your "You Must ReadThis Before Posting a Hijacking
Log" and a few problems showed up, which I cleaned. On all 3 computers
a file known as install.wse.exe wasfound and cleaned. Though the
computers are working better, I still getthe message "Page cannot be
displayed" from time to time. What else canI do??

This log is for the Northstar laptop (notebook).

I read your log in this topic.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R3 - URLSearchHook: URLSearchHook Class - {37D2CDBF-2AF4-44AA-8113-BD0D2DA3C2B8} - C:\Program Files\nzsearch\nzsearchenh.dll (file missing)

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Reboot the computer.

To clean the computer:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Performance and Maintenance.
3. Click Free up space on your hard disk.

The Disk Cleanup dialog box appears.
4. On the Disk Cleanup tab, select the following check boxes:
* Downloaded Program Files
* Temporary Internet Files
* Temporary Files
* Temporary Offline Files
* Offline Files
5. Click OK to delete the files from these locations.
6. When prompted, click Yes start the disk cleanup.

I hope this will help you.

This log looks clean too!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

    See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

    Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

    For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

By the way, I contacted Diamond CS (TDS-3) regarding killapps.exe. This is what they had to say. Thought I'd pass it allong to you.

Hi,

This is a riskware also known as grayware. Attackers often use legitimate tools in malicious ways, and many AV (and us) have started detecting them as riskware. The killapp gives away its usage, this tool reads from a config file and kills any running programs with the names in the list. You should have no need for this file on your PC, in rare cases it is used in installer and uninstall programs however, if you are unsure, leave the file

Best regards,
DiamondCS Support

Subject: Hello

Every time I run the evaluation version I have of TDS-3, I keep getting killapps.exe in various locations. I turn off system restore, have TDS-3 delete file only to find it again in a different location when I run TDS-3 again. Is killapps.exe a new Trojan or is it part of a program I need?

The last time it appeared as follows:

C:windows\system32\reinstallbackup\0001\driverifiles\killapps.exe

Should I continue to delete this file if it appears after my TDS-3 scan??

Thanks!

Jorge
