Hi cubbie. Welcome back. Long time, no see.

I don't see anything wrong with your daughter's laptop. Does she have a lot of music, photos, etc.?

You do have a lot of protective items on there: spyware guard, zone alarm, win patrol, etc. Did it start getting slower when you added something? Do you have the XP firewall turned on in addition to zone alarm?

Hello again!. No photos but does use I-tunes. No windows firewall enabled. Not able to pinpoint just when it began to get slow. Very annoying though, just to go into the control panel to check the Firewall protection takes over 30 seconds. She did use SIMS games which had some unbelievable large files and really made it slow. I took SIMS off and ran a defrag. Is there anything I have on there that I can try turning off or deleting to see if it makes a difference? Thanks

I would try disabling a few items a little at a time to see if it makes a difference.

Try disabling:

zone alarm
Spyware guard
winpatrol
Microsoft antispyware

See if that helps.

Also, just to make sure there is nothing lurking in the background, please do two things for me:

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Can you disable winpatrol and spyware guard and see if that helps?

I don't see anything in there that would cause it to be so slow that would be malware related.

Oh I'm going to bite the bullet and buy her a new HP laptop for her birthday. so, Given that it has VISTA, what protection is reccomended? Same as with XP and are those products listed on site Vista-Ready? I dont want to overload protection. What would be your reccomendation?

It will have Norton at first so what after that expires?

I assume Zone Akarm as a firewall would be good correct?

I have a Linksys wireless router with WEP already so set there.

What about SPYBOT and AD-AWARE, Spywareguard etc?

Thanks

If Norton comes with it, that should be fine but there are plenty of good free anti viral programs. Did you try reformatting the laptop before buying another one?

This is what I have one mine:
spyware blaster
spybot search and destroy
AVG Grisoft anti viral
Lavasoft Adaware
I also use the XP firewall: the IT at our job says that's all we need. This opinion varies. On some machines I have McAfee firewall that is a requirement to use for another job.

OK. Have the new PC with Vista. Very nice. I know all the XP spware prevention tools by heart. Now with Vista many are no longer applicable or are not compatable. So do you guys have a cheatsheet of what I need to do to keep this pc infection free and performing great (similar to what you tell people to do before they post logs)?
