Computer nearly unusable! All of sudden, copm running VERY slow!!!

Well we recently had an additional gig of RAM installed on our computer professionally. It was the correct type and everything, but now my computer is slower than it has ever been. I have ran some scans and they all just seem to say something is found but they don't know what!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

Anyway, my name is RatHat, and I will help you out with your problem computer. Now the first thing I see that can make a lot of difference to the performance of your machine, is that you have two AntiVirus programs running. This can provide false readings and also slow down your computer.

Please uninstall either Windows Defender, or Trend Micro Antivirus, so you only use one AV on your system. By the way, multiple AntiSpyware can run together without a problem, so keep all the ones you have installed.

When you have uninstalled an AntiVirus, please reopen HijackThis and scan a new log for me, and tell me how your computer is running now.

Well according to the Microsoft website, Windows Defender is an Anti-Spyware. I also remember back in the early stages of that program that it was called Microsoft Anti Spyware. "Spyware protection for free" as they say. But if you still want me to uninstall it I will.

You are correct, but I would like you to uninstall it for the moment to try and speed your computer up a bit.

Please uninstall Windows Defender, then rename HijackThis.exe to Snow.exe, run the file and post a new log.

Hey snowboardtogo,

Basically your log is clean, but seeing as you are still having problems lets see if a different program will find anything.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, DSS will open two Notepad files: main.txt and extra.txt
  • Use Save As to save both Notepad files to your Desktop and post them in your next reply.
Note:A copy of these files can be found in you root drive, usually C:\Deckard\System Scanner\

Hey snowboardtogo,

Sorry about the late reply, been very busy at work.

Well I cannot see anything wrong with your logs, malware wise. You said you had 1gig of Ram installed recently, how much should this give you in total?

OK, before I ask you to post in the Hardware forum, lets make doubly sure that you do not have any malware infecting your machine.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
  • Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
  • Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
  • Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
  • When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
    (This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
  • Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

You already have SUPERAntiSypware, so we'll use this for the next check:
  • Open SUPERAntiSypware.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.

  • Click Close to exit the program.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop (choose "I ACCEPT" then click "DOWNLOAD" on the website).

Double-click fsbl.exe then accept the agreement, click > "Scan" then > "Next".

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxxxxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Hey snowboardtogo,

Well, to be honest, I cannot find anything wrong with your log. You have included two results from Jotti though, did DrWeb not remove these files? And if not, what were the paths? (ie. C:\Windows\System32\YOURFILE.exe). If DrWeb did not remove them, we can use a tool that will delete them properly.

Now one thing I am unsure on is the amount of RAM that you have. I have a funny feeling that you should have either 1/2 GB, 1 GB, 2 GB, or 4 GB and not 1.5 GB, or odd multiples, and wonder if this could be the main cause of your problem. But as I say, I am unsure of this, so would like to ask you to post this question in the Hardware, Components and Peripherals forum, where experts in this field will be able to advise you properly.

I am going to keep this topic open, so that if you find that the problem is not hardware, you can come back and we will try to look a bit deeper.

Please keep a bookmark to this topic so you can come back easily, and let me know here if hardware does prove to be the cause of the problem so that I can close this out.

The file paths were

C:\hp\bin\KillWind.exe

and

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sandlot Shared\slghex.dll

I am not quite sure what those files are, but I really don't need to delete something that I don't really need to.

As for the RAM, the computer came with 512 MB. We upgraded by adding another gig giving it 1528 MB in total.
I will go ahead and post in the hardware forum.

Hey snowboardtogo,

I see you have asked the question about the RAM and hope you get an answer soon on this.

The KillWind.exe file is part of Back-Web, installed by HP, and enables HP to connect directly to a PC while it is online so that it can "push" content and program updates. You can uninstall the Backweb program through the Add/Remove Programs utility in Windows Control Panel.


slghex.dll on the other hand is Adware and can be removed safely.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.

  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sandlot Shared\slghex.dll


  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

When you have done this please post a fresh HijackThis log, and let me know if you have an answer about your RAM, and if your computer operates any better.
