I do have the CD but my CD-ROM is broken. If I need it to fix the computer, then I'll have to wait until I can get a new one to fix the computer.

I thought perhaps it might have been a conflict between some programs.

Symptoms could indicate many things:

Windows registry problem--few solutions: Get a registry repair software. My preference is the Windoctor included in Norton Systemworks 200x. There are others like Registry Mechanic, but I have no experience with it. Last resort is to backup what you want to keep and reload windows--if reloading doesn't solve it, you have a hardware problem.

Make sure you don't have more than one Antivirus software installed / active / running. There isn't many other things that can cause more strangeness than having more than one antivirus software on a machine at any one given time.

Spyware/Malware. Of course these days, this is the most suspected culprit, but I don't think this is your main problem at this point.

See where you can go with the above suggestions.

Additionally, how old is your hard drive? If it's approaching 2-3 years of age, it could be giving signs of beginning to fail. Also, how much RAM does your system have?

I only have Norton's 2002 running. The 'avast' that was on my system was a screen saver. :tazz: I deleted it.

I run Spybot and AdAware often, usually once a week, and especially if weird things keep happening.

My harddrive is about 2-3 years old. It was replaced when the last one started to physially decay.
I have 250 MB ram.

If I need to use a CD to fix it, then I'm screwed until I can get a another CD-ROM drive.

Hi.
Anansay,
are you sure you have the latest version of SpyBot and Ad-aware running?
Also, do you have the latest updates on these two?

Over time, and given windows 98 is now 8 years old (came out in 97), Windows 9x slowly built up a lot of crud over the years.

I used to reinstall every six months with win98. Even for people who are not having issues, you would be amazed how much zippier windows 98 is after a re-install

I downloaded Spybot from here a week ago and I always check for updates when I run it. Now... I don't know if it updates the program or just the definitions...

Anansay,
there's a new update for Ad-aware SE personal (defs update),
came just maybe half an hour ago,
maybe you should perform webupdate - feature and scan with full system scan.
And what comes to your SpyBot S&D,
if you have version 1.3, it's the latest.
And ad-aware SE build 1.05
is the latest..

are there about 70 files with the .cab extension?

Is there a setup.exe file there?

There are no *.cab files, and no setup.exe.

There are no files in the OPTIONS directory. In the sub-directory CABS there are these files:

Hhctrl.ocx
Html32.cnv
Hh (application file)
