Has any one experienced Vista having alot of fragmentaion? Is that why they have a daily setting in the defrag program? What is the best program out there for this problem.

Fragmentation is not a problem exclusive to Vista, its more a necessary evil in order to be able to store stuff on a hard drive. This applies whatever version of Windows you use and whatever computer system that runs from hard drive.

All fragmentation is is when a file is split up into different physical locations on a disk. To the user the file is all there, to Windows it may be all over the disk. Therefore all defragmentation does is put the bits back together to save the heads running all over the disk.

Anyway the idea of putting Scandisk, Backup and Defrag on an automated schedule isn't anything new, it was first added to Windows 98 First Edition on a weekly basis.

I purchased PerfectDisk 8.0, and went from a 32% reported fragmentation to a 0.2% fragmentation. To anyone out there looking for the ultimate defragger, check this out, they do have a 30 day trial version. But once it tried it and saw the results after one defrag, I went ahead and purchased it. Great product.
