I've been using Windows XP for a while. I didn't have internet for about a year and decided to use my brother in laws internet wirelessly using a netgear wireless adapter. It worked for about 15 mins. but then the network wasn't working eventhough the signal was still strong. Then the computer began to hang. First for a bit. Then alot. I then uninstalled both the adapter and the drivers and the problem was no more. After a week the computer began to do it again and I found out it was svchost. I would cause my computer to hang, I couldn't use the task manager unless I pressed alt ctrl del when I first logged on. So I decided to log on with my brothers user account and the problem didn't occur. Then after a few days I purchased a linksys wireless N usb adapter and the internet was fine for an hour. Then in returned on that account. When I tried to disable the svchost, it caused my computer to work but no sound came out except for the usual windows beeps and clicks when you open windows and such. No music, no movie sounds, no game sounds. I need help fixing this without having to resort to reinstalling windows over again. HELP ME! p.s. I'm not sure if it's coincidence but the problem occurred around when I installed limewire. Though limewire never was able to connect and I didn't even download anything. I don't think it was the program but if people could offer various suggestions I would greatly apprecieate it.

Because all these symptoms can be caused by malware, I would suggest you start by letting our experts have a look at the problem first off.

Please go to the Malware Forum and follow the instructions you'll find there.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- post a hijackthis log in THAT forum. Do Not reply to or "bump" your own topic...if it shows a reply, it may be overlooked as one that is being worked on.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.
