My office computer is Windows based and I'm considering trying out a version of Linux like Ubuntu on an older laptop that I use primarily for word processing and web surfing. Will files in Word, Adobe or Powerpoint be compatible on both systems? Is there a Linux distribution that is best for moving files back and forth from and to Windows?

You can download OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org), which can read and write Word and Powerpoint files, except for the latest version is M$ closed down. Adobe acroread is also available at www.adobe.com. Firefox is available for all platforms.

You can use FTP to transfer files, or if you want to put in more effort, you can setup samba. Unless you are constantly transfering files, FTP is good enough.
