You can download OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org), which can read and write Word and Powerpoint files, except for the latest version is M$ closed down. Adobe acroread is also available at www.adobe.com. Firefox is available for all platforms.
You can use FTP to transfer files, or if you want to put in more effort, you can setup samba. Unless you are constantly transfering files, FTP is good enough.
