Dark Laptop screen

At startup the screen flashes Fujitsu then goes dark. I can still barely see the screen. When hooking it up to an external monitor the external monitor works, laptop screen still black, when I switch through the view options the screen on the laptop flashes when going to display on both. I have tried brightening the display, and have updated the drivers. Any help is greatly appreciated.
