A few weeks ago I noticed that once in a while when I clicked on a google search result, the page was redirected to another search engine. Clicking "back" didn't return to Google, I had to actually click the back dropdown button and select the Google result and click it again, then it usually worked. However, over the last while this has become more and more frequent, to the point where every single time I clock on a Google result, the page is hijacked by another search engine (the main ones are abcsearch.com, upspiral.com and heavy.com, as well as a page which completely takes over the window and tries to download a so-called anti-virus program) Also, it's got worse from the point of view that it takes several attempts of going back to Google and clicking on the result before the page will work properly. I've tried several different spyware programs, virus scanners, CCleaner and Spyware Blaster and nothing's helping so I need help!

Here's my Hijack This logfile, any help would be appreciated:

First go to your C:\Antispywarestuff\Hijackthis\ folder Right click on HijackThis and then choose Reanme just change the name from HijackThis to anyothername.exe. (If you have an existing shortcut on your desktop to HJT it will no longer work after the rename...you can either make a new one with Rt. click or just run program from that folder.

Please download VundoFix.exe (by Atribune) to your Desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

You may have to do this several times until Vundofix 'learns' the files it needs to delete...run the scan at least 3 time IF it is finding file it can't delete. Hopefully by then you will get a No file found message.

The post a copy of c:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HijackThis.

That's great, thanks for the reply. VundoFix didn't run again on startup so I'm guessing it found what it needed. Just out of curiousity why was it necessary to rename Hijackthis?

Here's vundofix.txt:

Vundo can and will hide some of it's file under the 02/20 sections from HJT UNLESS it's renamed.

You need to print this out or save a copy to Notepad for reading because you can NOT have IE/FF or any browser open while doing the fix.

Open HijackThis and click on Do a system scan only. Place a check mark next to the following:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljjj - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljjj.dll (file missing)

Close ALL other open windows and programs and click Fix checked.

Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > Add/Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2RE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
    • Now please install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 86.0Update 1 manually..
    • Note to reboot the computer after updating:
    • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
    • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
    • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
        Downloaded Applets
        Downloaded Applications
        Other Files

    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
After a reboot post the Panda results and a fresh HijackThis log.

First I see you did what I ask But I need to Apologize..I some how copied an OLD Java update speech in to your thread .....the current version is 6.0 update 1..would you please UNinstall the version you have and get the latest version.....Again VERY sorry about that....

Go to Start>Run>Type in cmd then Enter>in the box that comes up enter the following:

sc delete Windows Log --> Enter

You can close thate window now

Next please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.

  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gijkgiml.exe
    C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files\webdlg32.inf
    C:\WINNT\EliteToolBar\*
    C:\WINNT\inf\flashtlk.inf
    C:\WINNT\inf\biini.inf
    C:\WINNT\system32\BundleOuter.exe
    D:\Barry\Netstuff\overnet0.52.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (just please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Once all of that is done you should be good to go...would you please post one final (?) HijackThis log and any comments about how the computer is running.

P.S. If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Cool, I updated Java, and I ran Killbox. I didn't get the PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, but I couldn't find the C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files\webdlg32.inf file either. I ran a search and it definitely wasn't in the directory so I went ahead and deleted the others. I haven't had time to test the computer too much since then (I only did this about an hour ago) but I've run a few Google searches since then and it seems like the problem is sorted. I'm not getting those search hijackers anymore so it seems alright. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. Here's the Hijack this log:

when you ran the Start>Run>cmd then sc delete Windows Log Did you receive any type of msg? I see the service is still listed.

Let try one more time, with an addition.
Start>Run>cmd.

Then in the windows that comes up enter each line separately with Enter after each line.
sc stop Windows Log
sc delete Windows Log.

REBOOT

If you then run a new HiackThis log is the last line gone??

You don't need to post the log..just let me know one way or the other if its gone or not.

Yeah, I forgot to mention, when I tried doing that part, I got this message:

[SC] OpenService FAILED 1060:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

The same thing happened with the "sc delete" command. Do I need to run it in a certain directory?

No...any directory should work....The problem lies in the fact that MOST services have a 1)Display name and 2) a service name ( They are the names in parenthesis) Usally you delete a service by it's service name..This one doesn't have one and I'm thinking the space in the name is the problem....could you include Windows Log in quotes and see if that will do it.
PS you are using a Captial W and L ...EXACTLY as written here aren't you??

Yeah, I was trying it with the capitals. I've just tried it with quotes and capitals, the sc stop message came back with:

[SC] ControlService FAILED 1062:

The service has not been started.

But the sc delete command came back with:

[SC] DeleteService SUCCESS

After this, I ran Hijack, and that line you mentioned isn't showing up in the logfile anymore.

That's what I wanted to see.

Quote

[SC] ControlService FAILED 1062:

The service has not been started.

I expected that..why I didn't include the stop in the 1st time...

Good job your log is clean.

You can delete the killbox vundofix and c:\!killbox folder/files now..

First, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
    1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
    2. Restart your computer.

    3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab.
Click the "Delete Cookies" button and then the "Delete Files" button next to it.
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content",
(You will have to re-enter passwords at websites that require them.)
Click OK

Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin:
Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard and IE/Spyad.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It is free.

Okay, all that's done, and I've downloaded those programs. Anything else I need to do?
