i've used you guys before and have downloaded alot of the malware removal software.

i have downloaded several files from limewire (enough said, huh?) over the past 6 months. as of today, when i try to play songs on itunes, i get a message that says "setup file expired. file is corrupt from transfer." this occurs with all my audio files. i also noticed that there were several "movies" in a shared folder that i have never (a) created or (b)downloaded, and all of my audio files are .exe files in limewire. i am concerned about someone hacking onto my hard drive. my next step is to uninstall limewire from my computer, but i am wondering if there is any way to save the music files i have already downloaded.

i have run spyware guard, spyware blaster, spybot, adaware, agv, and norton. norton says i have bloodhound.sonar.1 and that this is of medium risk. spybot's detected some other things on a regular basis (like caselmedia). i run these programs twice a week.

i also notice that every time i log off my computer a program called jusched.exe is running and i have to click "end now" to complete my log off process. other than these detected things my computer seems to be running ok; i'd just like to get the crap cleaned off and hopefully restore my music files.

please help! thanks alot!

Hello Geri and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

ALL staff here at Geeks To Go are volunteers, please bear that in mind if I don't answer your post as quickly as you'd like; I give what time I can.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC's (family PC's) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual's setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions! (Click the Options drop down near the upper right of the topic. Select Print this topic.)

That's a clean HJT log. Let's see what we can do with a couple of scans.

You appear to have two antivirus (AV) programmes running; Norton and AVG free. This is bad practice as they will cause slowness and also conflicts. Please uninstall one of them.

Please uninstall these programmes via the Add or Remove applet in the control panel:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
LimeWire 4.12.11
Viewpoint Media Player

Let's start the scans.

Please visit Kaspersky using Microsoft Internet Explorer, for an online scan. Please select extended in the scan settings option; you will find it to be the second option from the top. Please post the Kaspersky log in your reply

Download this file: combofix.exe to your Desktop

Do NOT run this tool in safe mode.

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When it has finished, it will produce a log. Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

And finally

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

thanks again for the rapid response. i really appreciate all your help!!! and not to worry--i understand that you are mere mortal. :-) if no nasties are found, i am still grateful for all your efforts. none of which have gone unnoticed! seriously! that being said...

...i ran 2 of the 3 scans you recommended. i am having a problem with the kaspersky. i tried to run this in internet explorer as you suggested. i accepted the "terms of agreement," but when the program tried to initialize the online scanner, i got a "popup" stating: "Click here to install the following ActiveX control: ‘kavwebscan_unicode.cab’ from ‘Kaspersky lab’…" when i did this i got rerouted to the "terms of agreement" page, but with no "Accept" or "Decline" button to continue the process. i tried several times. at one point i got a message stating: "You must have administrative rights on this computer; you also must have the IE security settings to the Medium level." hmmm.... what to do, what to do??? the other scans are as follows:

here is my combofix log:

"Geri Phillips" - 2007-05-21 22:11:15 Service Pack 2
ComboFix 07-05.21.6.V - Running from: "C:\Documents and Settings\Geri Phillips\Desktop\"

Hello again Geri

All three logs are negative for malware.

Is it possible that you can provide more information from the Norton scan, even a screen capture? I am looking for a path to the malware.

This file: jusched.exe is the Java updater, and nothing to worry about.

You are right to be concerned about Limewire or any other P2P programme; they are the reason that 99% of people visit this forum.

hello crustybloke...

this is good news you're giving me! i'm glad that you've found nothing! but a little sorry to have wasted your time.

about the norton info... i uninstalled that program. and when i did, it asked me what i wanted to do with the quarantined files, i chose to delete them. should i reinstall norton? and if i do, will i still be able to gather the info you're looking for (since it's been deleted)?

limewire is wicked evil. when i initially ran an avg scan after i caught the worm, it was quarantined. since then, i've run avg twice and the worm has not been detected. could the beastly worm be gone for good? hope so. i'd be a happy camper knowing the loss of all my mp3s wasn't in vain.

Hello again

No need to burden your system with Norton again. As far as I can tell, you are clean and I am happy to sign you off.

Congratulations! your new logs are clean. :whistling: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn OFF System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

MVPS Hosts file This replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Please bookmark/add to favourite this site as the file is updated every 14 days, so you need to do this once a month. There is now a facility for you to register your email address with the site to be informed of updates. The link is towards the foot of the page.

SiteAdvisor download this plug-in for your browser and it will alert you of a known bad site for FREE.

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
WINDOWS DEFENDER - With daily updates and scans, this programme offers good security against malware.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programme for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

If you used ComboFix during the fix and have files quarantined at C:\qoobox\, you may delete that folder and its content.

It just remains for me to wish you happy safe surfing; I hope you found my advice helpful.
