I have had this DLINK wireless router for quite some time now. It has worked fine, having a it downstairs with a XBOX connected to it, and a wire from it running up to my room upstairs connecting to a Sling Box I have. I have a laptop in my room and have always been able to connect from the router downstairs since I got it. But recently, all of a sudden, my computer cant locate the wireless router. I cant connect to the internet unless I plug in the connection I have for my sling box to my laptop. I go to the wireless connections, and it cant even locate the one I have been using all this time. I have no clue why!

Hi vkelly, welcome to Geeks to Go! I'm just wondering if the wireless connectivity has been turned off? Are you able to access the router's interface and make sure it's switched on? Can you also check to make sure that the router looks physically in good condition - the aerial is still properly attached etc?

how do you check to see if it is turned on??? I would never purposily turn if off, if it is, so I dont know how that would happen. But I would like to check, just incase. And it is still in great condition.

First of all, I just remembered a friend of mine had this problem once. He brought it around to my place to see if he could connect to my wireless router, and I had to flip the switch on the laptop! Depending on the model you have, there may be a physical little switch on the front/side/back of the laptop that needs to be ON. Sometimes they are very easy to bump. The reason a laptop would include this switch is so you could save extra battery power by keeping it off if you don't use it. Check your laptop manual if you can't find it, you may not have one, or it could be hiding... If this isn't the problem...

With your laptop connected via cable, type in the address for your router (typically <192.168.0.1>), it should give you a login page that accesses the router's configuration page. You should be able to find all this information in your user guide, if you don't have it any more visit the d-link website, select your router and you should be able to find the manual for download. In fact, the manual should be able to tell you everything you need to check. What you are looking for is how to access/change the following settings:

* Is the wireless connection switched ON?
* Is the SSID switched ON?

If any of these are the problem, then you should be able to follow the instructions and turn them back on. If this is or isn't the problem, let us know anyway, so I know all is good OR so someone with good networking knowledge can take further steps with you.
