Hi,
My computer has been running very slowly recently. I think it was after getting a lot of spyware from a site that streams full episodes of family guy. Also, perhaps unrelated, I haven't been able to log on onto AIM either. When I try it says "connecting" then "connection lost..." This makes no sense since I have a cable line and surf the web simultaneously. Anyway heres are my logs

Hijackthis log:

Hi Marvel: Welcome to GTG. :whistling: Sorry it took so long to get back with you, but we can get you some help now.

You have AVG, Norton running and I see traces of McAfee. You only need one anti-viral. Having more than one slows down your computer. Please remove one of the anti-virals through add/remove programs.

Also, go to add/remove programs and remove these programs:

BitComet
Viewpoint Manager

Also, did you try to fix Vundo using various programs before you posted this log? I see traces of it in your log as well. Please advise before we go further.

Okay, so I got rid of View point and bit comet. I did not find McAfee or norton. I do have symantec installed though. I tried to uninstall that but it said I didn't have enough system previledge. Here's my new hijack log:

Hi Marvel:

Are you running grisoft anti-spyware or anti-viral? If it's anti-viral, please uninstall it since you can't get rid of Norton.

Please run hijack this and put check marks next to these:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: cbxuvst - cbxuvst.dll (file missing)

Please reboot.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
Also, give me a new hijack this log. :whistling:

Nothing is jumping out at me. We can run a silent runner's log but there are other reasons why a computer can get slower.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

A slow computer does not mean there is malware present. I don't see anything in your Hijack This log to indicate that your problem is malware related. I will post the following info to get you started in the right direction, but if you need further help with this you will have to post a new topic in the proper Operating System Forum. I'm closing this topic.

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently:

Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theelderg...nup_utility.htm

Defrag your HD:

http://artsweb.bham....rag-win2kxp.htm

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to restart. Go ahead and restart.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Keep in mind that some entries will be re-enabled in the startups each time you use that particular program. Therefore, you will have to find the option in that programs preferences that says something like "Load with Windows" or "Run when Windows Starts" and disable that option.

Go here for info on msconfig:

http://www.pacs-port...artup_index.htm

You can look up the startups at the following links to help determine what is needed and what is not:
