Unable to login - system immediately logs me off

I had a couple of unwanted files that appeared upon running HiJackThis. I removed them using KillBox. The system rebooted. Subsequently, when I tried to login, it momentarily showed the desktop and then automatically logged off. I tried to login in safe mode, but the same thing continues to happened. I enter user name and password, the system thinks for a moment, and then logs me off.
