Well cbt 1124,
Is your startup and shutdown any faster?
One thing that has helped me for quite a while now on shutdown,
is uphclean.exe User Profile Hive Cleaner from M$

Hi Steve,

Things that affect your startup: (No particular order)
1.Having a lot of fonts.
2.Lots of temp or internet temp files.
3.Lots of history files.
4.Lots of services running. In particular Indexing services whether M$ (Windows)
or other programs like Picasa.Google desktop etc.
5.Scanners anti malware, virus etc. (if on startup and set to scan immediately).

A quick check is to start TaskManager as soon as you see a Desktop.
Processes tab.
Tick the box to show all services.
See what's eating your CPU and memory or both.
How many services are running normally?
Is it possible to reduce that number?IOW, do you need all of them?

There are other programs like Process Explorer
http://www.microsoft...ssExplorer.mspx

or What's Running
http://www.whatsrunn...nning/main.aspx
but like I said for a quick check TaskManager is fine.

Pete.
