*user being helped via chat, as well*

Hi Musicmaker! You indicated in chat that you had removed a couple of entries via HJT prior to posting your log. I need to take a look at what all was removed, as there may be other steps involved other than just fixing with HJT.

I need for you to restore the backup that HJT made:

To restore the backups:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click the Backups button
  • Place a check mark next to everything in that window
  • Click Restore
  • Click Yes
  • Reboot your computer
  • Re-open HiJackThis and post a new logfile for review.
Let me know in chat as soon as you have done this, and I'll take another look!

Ok, musicmaker, let's get you all fixed up! You may want to print these instructions or save them to a WordPad file on your desktop. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the Internet, or my instructions!

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.
  • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://searchmiracle.com/sp.php
  • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://searchmiracle.com/sp.php
  • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
  • R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
  • O3 - Toolbar: &EliteBar - {825CF5BD-8862-4430-B771-0C15C5CA8DEF} - C:\windows\EliteToolBar\EliteToolBar version 60.dll (file missing)
  • O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present << fixing this entry will fix the problem you are having with not being able to change your homepage, etc.
Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

2. Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\windows\EliteToolBar

3. Reboot your computer, and post a fresh HijackThis log for me to make sure everything is cleaned up now! Also, let me know if the problems you were having have been taken care of!

Hi again, musicmaker! Your log is clean now! I'm glad that you're computer is running fine again!

one thing I want to ask you before we are through....Did you set this to read this on purpose?

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = [bleep]IN NET

If not, we need to do some research to see what is causing it to call itself that.

Also, Messenger Plus is known to bundle malware onto your system, without your knowledge. We recommend uninstalling the program and using a safer alternative.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
