Wireless antenna

I know about networking and routers and stuff. My problem is with buying an external antenna. I don't know what to look at. I narrowed it down to.

1. 11dbi 3ft cable
2. 7dbi 5t cable

everything else is identicle. Would I be better getting the 7dbi and having it 2 foot closer to the source. is the 11dbi performance increased enough that 2 feet won't matter.
