Someone keeps asking to start IM with him

When you sign up for IM, do you open your computer to the other person's computer? Can they attach viruses or trojans? If he is he only person you add to your computer, can others find you and try and IM you?

I have so many questions because I am very worried about IM with a person and how is IMing.
