Help!

I have just installed a game, Sid Meier's pirates, and upon loading it says 'cannot initialise DirectX'.
I have installed direct X, the correct version, whilst installing pirates.
The site faq says that you should update graphic card drivers, which I have done, or try the game in safe mode, but that doesn't work either.

Any ideas? Supposed to be a great game.
