How to stop embedded video from automatically playing?

Is there a way to stop video on sites from starting automatically? Not just youtube but other sites that have videos on them in various formats. I'm talking about videos on the actual sites, not that play in popup windows media player, etc. Maybe some sort of app or shareware? Thanks.

In "Internet Explorer", Extra > Internet-Options > Advanced > Multimedia , there you normally can disable them
