Hello!

I have been hit with some of the same problems as others on this site and have read the threads and posts related to the problems that I am encountering, namely the “Danger Spyware” desktop wallpaper, right mouse button not functioning in Windows Explorer but working elsewhere (e.g. Internet), unable to change wallpaper, and the occasional pop-up ad with “Spyware Danger” and link. I don’t know if there has been any discussion about the source of this problem, but in my case, it might have come into my system after a “free” download of Spyware Doctor. Does anyone have any ideas where this could have come from?

Anyway, after having read through some of the threads and followed some of the advice and recommendations, the following have been resolved:

· I no longer have the “Spyware Danger” wallpaper
· Right mouse button now works in Windows Explorer

Tools used to resolve the above were:

· Lavasoft Ad-aware Personal SE (with latest definitions)
· Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition (with latest definitions)
· CWS Shredder
· Trend Housecall
· CleanUp! V3.1,
· Pocket Killbox
· Spysubtract (with latest definitions)
· Spybot Search & Destroy (with latest definitions)
· Hijack This

In addition, Regedit was used to change the parameters of:

· NoViewContextMenu
· C:\desktop

I have just downloaded AVG Free Edition and ran the program:

· Trojan Horse Downloader.Small.30.L (installer_SIAC.exe) found
· AVG deleted the file

Also downloaded TDS-3 and found no errors or problems.

After all of that, my desktop is back close to where it originally was. However, a few issues still remain:

· Still cannot change the wallpaper (now I just have blue “wallpaper”)
· Options under Desktop Properties for wallpaper are grayed out and not able to select or scroll the choices for wallpaper
· Occasionally, I get an error message – “Explorer has generated errors and will shut down …”
· Installing programs will add two shortcut icons to the desktop


How do I resolve these final issues? Any help would be much appreciated!!!!

then close all other open windows and click 'fix checked"

Next, open up My Computer and delete the following file (if present):

C:\WINNT\system32\gah95on6.exe

It may be necessary to show hidden files.

once you've done that, reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks for the reply and your analysis of my HiJackThis log. I have done as you recommended, i.e. fixing the two items checked in the HiJackThis. I have also deleted the C:\WINNT\system32\gah95on6.exe file.

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

then change the "save as type" to "all files" and save it as unlock.reg

double click on the file, and click yes when it asks you if you want to merge the information with the registry.

next, search your computer for desktop.html and popup.html and delete them if found.

Next, reboot and tell me if that fixes the problem

For the code that you sent me, do I include "REGEDIT4" in the file, or just the to HKEY lines?

I don't have NotePad, but rather I have WordPad, which doesn't allow me to save as "all files". Can I save it as a .txt or .doc and then rename it to unlock.reg later?

Thanks for the follow-up. I still have a couple of issues:

1. Under the administrator log-in, which was the problem that you have addressed, I am able to change the desktop wallpaper, etc. However, I still get double icons for each app. When I delete one, the other one gets deleted also. In addition, when I restore it from the Recycle Bin, both icons come back.

2. The other issue is more like the first one, in that when I log on as another user, I still have the issue of a HTML desktop, and am unable to change the wallpaper. I have checked the HijackThis log to look for the same fixes as before, but cannot find the items.

indeed, the other account is still infected. Basically your computer separates the different accounts into their own little areas, so cleaning one didn't fix the other. Lets get this one cleaned up.

Download and Save Spywadfix to your computer from this link:

It may be necessary to show hidden files If you cannot locate them.

Also, run the Other Profiles Regfix.vbs script on the admin account as well. Its a more elaborate regfix that should clear up your problem with your icons as well.

Once you've done all that, reboot and tell me if you're still having problems.

Thanks so much for all your help. I think everything is working fine now after the .vbs files were run. Couldn't find any of the xxx.exe files in WINNT or WINNT/System32 folders. I did show hidden files in those folders and still didn't find any of those xxx.exe files. Hopefully this will have fixed everything related to the malware.
