Over the past two or three weeks I have been having viruses and trojans crop up every day or so. I think I have removed a couple with help from the people over on the Spybot Message boards but they dont seem to be replying to me anymore. I am gonna try it here to see if my luck is any better.

Over the course of the last week I have run across the following bad files on my various virus scan/spyware sweeps.

w32/Backdoor.ARKO (its in System32 folder - EOSHJDGV.dll is the infected file)
w32/Dropper.ESC (also in System32 folder - DL52.exe is infected file)
w32/Downloader2.AH2G (System32 - TIQASQ1065.exe)

I thought I had the above deleted...but

The following are from my latest virus scan two days ago

w32/Trojan.NODI (backup-20070612 & jceglnpn.dll are infected, I think they may be in the hijackthis folder actually)
w32/Downloader2.AHCG (AOO13774.exe in system volume info/restore folder)
w32/Dropper.ESC (in system volume info/restore folder)
w32/Downloader2.AHGC (system32/t6/dlwr.exe)

I have tried to run the Trend Micro virus scanner as requeted but it does not seem to want to run. I will not try to run the eTrust virus scanner as every time I open Internet Explorer a pop up virus fires up.

Spybot catches things and then it doesnt. It depends on what I run first, the virus scanner or spybot. I ran the virus scanner first today so all spybot detected was tracking cookies.

Here is my HijackThis log that I just ran a few minutes ago. Alot of the problems I am having seem to be coming from the system volume info/restore area.

If you can help me I would be eternally greatful. If I need to do more so you can help me, let me know. I also ran Spybot and AdAware in safemode and they found nothing, but today I have had a couple warnings bringing up BlackCore and Downloader2 again.

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Then reboot your computer.

Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Fist,

Go to: C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\satecipi43855.dll. In Windows XP right-click the file and select "send to compressed (zipped) folder". Then select the .zip file, and do File / Add a password. Make the password "infected".

Please email the zip to me at:

didom[AT]malware-research.co.uk (replace [AT] with @)

Thank you! :whistling:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Step #1

Go to start > controlpanel > software > add/remove programs and uninstall next if present:

Ipwindows / ipwins
Oin
Outerinfo
Yazzle by Oin
YazzleActiveX By OIN
Purityscan by Oin
MediaTickets by OIN
Snowballwars by Oin
Cowabanga by OIN
or anything similar with Oin in it.

If OIN not listed, download and run this uninstaller.

Reboot when done! Really important!

Step #2

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C8237B56-A602-40C4-9862-D427EEA94C2C} - (no file)

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.amaena.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.drivecleaner.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.errorprotector.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.errorsafe.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.imageservr.com

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.winantispyware.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.winantivirus.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.winfixer.com (HKLM)

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Step #3

Download: DelDomains.inf
  • Locate DelDomains.inf
  • Right-click and select "Install"
Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Step #5

Find and delete these files and folders (if they are still there):
C:\Temp <- delete everything INSIDE this folder

Step #1

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fnuloprg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\pckmkiq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\retadpu2000219.exe
C:\WINDOWS\uccspecb.sys
C:\DOCUME~1\Reese\LOCALS~1\Temp\thinksnet.exe

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\TQ0
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\T1QaSQ
C:\Program Files\Outerinfo

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Outerinfo]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\runner1]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\{ZN}]

Save this as ComboFix-Do.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

Referring to the screenshot above, drag ComboFix-Do.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please post the log from the ComboFix scan located at C:\ComboFix.txt.

Can you tell me what is inside this folder:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\win

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Step #1

I see Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.co...cle.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Step #2

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

File::
C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\satecipi43855.dll

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\o02PrEz
C:\Program Files\Ipwindows

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\OuterinfoUpdate]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\IpWins]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects]
{1DEC4667-BE8D-46EB-953E-5C16F051ED8A}=-

Save this as ComboFix-Do.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

Posted Image

Referring to the screenshot above, drag ComboFix-Do.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Step #3

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
Step #4

After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously, the ComboFix scan located at C:\ComboFix.txt together with a new hijackthislog in your next reply.

Another question here. My virus scanner keeps recognizing bad files in my Recycler folder. Can I delete everything in there safely?

Please find and delete this folder:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\win

Then, to delete your recycle bin:

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

attrib -r -s -h %systemdrive%\RECYCLER
del %systemdrive%\RECYCLER
attrib -r -s -h %systemdrive%\RECYCLED
del %systemdrive%\RECYCLED
shutdown /r /t 0 /f

Save the file as recyclerem.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".
This is how the batch must look afterwards: Posted Image

Double-Click on the file recyclerem.bat, a small DOS type window should open and close immediately.
You can answer any questions with "Yes".

Then reboot your computer.

Post a fresh HijackTHis log and tell me how your system is running now!

The computer runs much faster now. I am still getting small pauses every now and then, those mostly occur in the first 10 minutes I am connected to the internet, which makes me think there still may be some problems. I have today off so I will run all of my maintenance programs (spybot, adaware, the virus scanner and sypware remover that came with my ISP) And for the most part I have not received any new virus warnings from my virus scanner and the ones that have popped up are in my System Restore folder and in the Recycler folders, which is why I asked if it was ok to delete its contents. I have a bunch of quarantined files in the QooBox folder, is it safe to delete all of those? Lastly, do you think it is safe for me to use Internet Explorer again? That is were all of these problems seem to have come from. I was using it and the popups began and every time a popup attack happened, they were in IE, even if I wasnt using it at the time.

Yes, you can delete:

C:\VundoFix Backups
C:\QooBox

Also you can safely empty your recycle bin.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check "Turn off System Restore".
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot your computer.

  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check "Turn off System Restore".
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and following the prompts. If you are running Windows XP make sure you get updated to SP-2!!

Please post back if you are still having any problems....

I have another couple of questions that I want to ask. First, I read somewhere that when Java updates that I should delete older versions. Is there any truth or necessity to this? Second, is there a place where I can make a donation to the site? Your help was sooooo appreciated and I want to contribute somehow. I don't have a lot of money but I want to donate something.

One other thing. I currently have Spybot, Adaware, Cox Communications Security Suite (Includes anti-virus and any-spyware), am running Windows Firewall plus a router (which I have been told by many people is like a second fire wall). Ialso have SpywareBlaster but I dont know how it runs so I am not sure if it is active or not. As for using other browsers, I use Firefox and Netscape along with IE. I have certain things I like to use each broswer for, I just hope that the next time I open IE everything doesnt kick off again.

Well, it is true that autoupdaters of Sun Java do not uninstall previous (vulnerable) versions of the program. If a user utilizes the automatic update mechanism of the JRE the previous vulnerable version is left on the system, and that those previous vulnerable versions can still be called by malware. Therefore all users are encouraged to uninstall any older versions of Sun Java.

To do that:

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
You can find some info on donations here: http://www.geekstogo...ation-t132.html

To "activate" SpywareBlaster: download the latest updates, and you'll see a list of all spyware programs covered by the program (NOTE: this is NOT spyware found on your computer)
Press "Enable All Protection", and you're done. Don't forget to check for updates every week or so.

As for the Browsers... You know about the FireFox 'IE Tab' Add-on: https://addons.mozil...efox/addon/1419 ?

That will be even safer. But the most important thing is: watch what you surf!
