If you boot the PC without the XP CD in, does it still make the clicking noise

Seems the CD or the CD drive is the problem, can you clean the CD, also try other CD's to see if they click instead of load

You can leave the hard drive for the moment

but would the cd or cd drive cause the taskbar and icons to go missing? I'll go tet the other CDs now.

No clicking with any other discs...and discs which shoul dself boot dont, but are readable.

With the boot CD, the black screen with white writing (forgotten the name) seems to hang when it says something like "searching for record from Boot Disc" clicks a few times then proceeds to load, any other CD displays the message but it promptly moves on.
