Win XP
Pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHZ
2.79GHz, 1 GB RAM
Outlook 2003

I'm using Outlook to manage a pop3 mail account for work. Outlook responds slowly to everything I do, be it scrolling through messages or responding to button clicks (i.e. starting a new message). I have reinstalled, run spybot & ad-aware and it has been of no help. It's really frustrating and time consuming to check messages. Can anyone help?

I’m having the same problem with Outlook 2003 as Piggyprobe. I’m even running a similar system (XP with a P4). I have Outlook configured to open the preview pane on the bottom. When I try to switch between messages using the arrow keys it takes FOREVER. Even if the messages as plain text with no attachments. Sometimes when I’m composing a new message there is massive lag/delay between key strokes and the characters appearing in the message body.

I’ve tried cleaning up/out my contacts folder of any duplicate entries. I’ve tried adjusting my security settings to “lighten up” a bit. I’m allowing pictures to be downloaded in messages. I’ve extended the time between auto send and receives. I use a free version of Avast AV that does scan Outlook but it’s a fairly non-invasive app and has never caused a problem before. I’m also fairly sure it only scans when I open Outlook and when I send and receive. I don’t think it scans while I’m fishing through my mail folders.

My machine, in all other respects, is running well. Connection speed is good. Boot time is good. File retrieval is good. Excel and Word both open and operate fine. It’s just Outpuke that is giving me angst (my wife as well).

If the solution is just to use Express that’s fine. But if there is a fix for this, I’d like to know of it. I use Outlook at work and I find it easier to use the same program all around. I know MS apps are not the end all be all but I’m just another sheep who, after years of having few options, has found a comfort zone with them. GTG has yet to let me down on a post. Hope history repeats itself here. Thanks.

Piggyprobe,

If you haven't already, take a look at the "similar topic" link at the bottom. There is a fix listed in that thread that might be the problem. I'm at work so I can't verify it until I get home tonight.

Ok, call me stupid, but I can't seem to find anything in the msoft forums about 931768. Any ideas?

The work around he suggested does work, though.

No need to check MS forums.

Open Control Panel.
Click on "Add/Remove Programs"
Check box "Show Updates"

931768 is an IE update (I mention this as there may be a list of Office updates as well). Remove it. Windows will warn you that the "following programs may not work if the update is removed". You are forced to reboot after the update is removed. There were no adverse affects from removing the update. The only thing that happened is Comodo, my software firewall, ask my permission to allow IE to access the Internet because, technically, the program had changed. I simply allowed it again.

I tried the work around first so I'm not sure which action actually solved the problem. I think the "Outlook Today" solution is for each instance you open Outlook. The update removal is probably permanent. Of course Windows immediately informed me that updates were ready for my computer (insert theme from Psycho here). I may simply let it install again and just use the work around as the update affected other programs aside from Outlook and not necessarily in a bad way. I'd just prefer to get the corrected update.

Now the problem comes of determining when update 931768 will be fixed or if a newer update will be created to fix it. I wonder if MS has some sort of alert you can sign up for.

Geeks To Go any thoughts?

thanks for the info.

shocking that IE 7 causes even more problems. I would love to have a job in their R & D department. Apparently you don't have to work very hard.

Ouch. But you are right. I like the tab based browsing (wait didn't Mozilla already come up with that?) but don't like the removal of the image toolbar. I'm running both IE6 and IE7 for that reason. I'd switch to Firefox but my wife would whine. She hates it when I change things on the computer because her learning curve is slow. :whistling:

I found a solution that worked for me. File Archive There entered the date of less than 60 days. And had a Archive File Folder.
