I just bought an old P3 and installed Windows XP on it. It's running surprisingly smooth but upon opening my internet browser for the very first time, I encountered a pop up telling me that windows needs immediate attention. It says Windows has found 55 critical system errors and to fix the errors, to do the following:

1. Download Registry Update from: www.regfixit.com (I've seen 3 or 4 different addresses to visit to "fix" the problem which indicates to me that its adware)
1. Install Registry Update
3. Run Registry Update
4. Reboot your computer

then it says that failure to act now may lead to system failure!

It keeps popping up over and over and OVER and it's driving me nuts. Please, help.

this is confusing me. Is it adware? AVG Free just finnished downloading so I'm about to install and run it to see if it picks anything up but should I do anything else? Is there a chance this is legit?

It sounds like you have a trojan in your boot sector or some other protected part of your hard drive. It may have been there from the previous installation.
