I am new at building computers and I don't what what parts work together and I would like to build a cheap computer for around $500 and I would like to buy the parts from this site www.newegg.com so can anyone help me?

The total is $447.94 witch leaves you with $52.06 to pick out a case. I am kind of new at building computers so just to make sure thease parts work fine together I recommend asking someone else on the forum to make sure they work together.

I would go a whole different route:

Case: $39.99 link
Motherboard: $74.99 link
Video Card: $94.99 link
Power Supply: $59.99 link
Processor: $139 link
RAM: $39.99 link
DVD Burner: $26.49 link
Hard Drive: $41.99 link

TOTAL: $517.43

This build will get you decent overall performance, including gaming, but you could go for an average video card and get a bigger hard drive (or two of the same).

EDIT: Don't forget this is just a box. It does not include a monitor/keyboard/mouse or an operating system! If you are expecting to have everything for $500, I wouldn't bother, I'd save up a bit more. It would really be pretty average.

I like ruth's build but I would hold out on the graphics card and grab an operating system. Whenever I build budget systems I always leave the video card out because it something easy to upgrade later.

Edit: Ewww, just noticed. Do away with the "value" RAM too. It will be worth the extra $10 for the quality of some good stuff. Plus he may want to overclock this to squeeze as much out of it as he can.

1. no headroom...(upgradeability)
2. if it runs vista at all it will be painfully slow...

Link to new RAM, it's only a few dollars more ($45.99), this is in response to Titan's suggestion. I usually do choose quality brand RAM and also *not* the value series, but it was my first time on Newegg, so gimme a break!

Still there are some upgrades that could be taken, and surely it wouldn't be THAT slow on Vista? Considering all parts are new and quality... ???

EDIT: anyway, I don't know anything about MSI, so possibly a different motherboard? Also if overclocking is a consideration, I would suggest an 80mm intake fan for the front of the case (a 120mm exhaust seems to be included with the case), link

MSI boards are usually good for "budget" builds. I wouldn't recommend it if overclocking was involved though. That build with possibly another gig of RAM would run Vista and wouldn't by any means be "painfully slow".

Newegg is great ruth. Much better interface than tigerdirect. Sometimes tigerdirect's products are $5 cheaper or so though.

Umart.com.au provides the cheapest components in my local area, I just order them online and go and pick them up myself.
