"my computer" on my computer is playing up badly! HELP H

so ok, my computer is being funny, it wont update, if i put a memory stick in or put a dvd or cd-rom in, it dont change which presents a problem with certin vital programs i need that will not as a result work from this.

of course i can just do stuff like type in the address of the memory stick in myself or explore dvd-drive but it simple wont work for certing programs i use.

at the moment the only way for it to reconsise something is to restart the pc and wen it loads up its there
