Feel really supid here. I changed the powersetting on my display. this is what i did:

opened display, clicked on screen saver then power
Clicked on UPS
chose APC then back-ups
enable all notifications

Critical alarm
minutes on the battery before critical alarm 2 (this was already set)

Next instuct the computer to: shut down

then hit configure
and then when i saved it the computer started shuttiing down and I couldn't get it to stop. Now the coputer will start then start shutting down. I don't know what to do. My start up disk doesn't work. I get an error message when I try and use it.

F10 and F8 won't work (safe mode) and although F1 works there is nothing there that helps me I don't think.

My computer is a Compaq presario with 60GB hardrive, CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive. The system is XP home.

Thanks for any help you can give me. You know the old story, money is tight and I don't want to have to spend it in a shop if I don't have to. Thanks again for reading this.

I'm not too sure about UPS systems, but have you tried using Safe Mode? When you turn on your computer, repeatedly tap F8 and you should be presented with a menu - select safe mode and see if you can fix it then.

The only other thing I can think of is to disconnect the UPS, so you just have the computer connected without it. I'm guessing it might give you an error saying the device is disconnected or something, but you might be able to change from there?

EDIT: Okay I'm good, I just re-read your post. Yes you've tried safe mode... Doesn't it do this when your UPS is on its way out? My guess is if you can borrow another one, you might be able to change it.

I think too the trick of continually tapping rather then holding the key down may have helped. Thanks. you saved me.

disconnecting the UPS should disable the UPS settings...thereby allowing you back in....your issue sounds like your UPS is either broken...or simply not charged yet? or wasn't plugged into the wall maybe?...shouldn't have been firing the critical alarm untill the battery hit the critical set point...

never hold...always tap...if you hold the key in you can cause a keyboard error...which will cause you to not be able to do anything


deffinitely get your UPS checked out...something's wrong with it
