Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I inherited a smf website. The old owner removed some templates and left.

My problem is members have been logging in and when they do it's not
their log in name. It could me admin, mods or just a regular member. We have done a restore.
Upgraded to the next browswer (1.1.2 to 1.1.3). Have done everything the smf
people have told us to.

How and why is this happening. How can we stop it?

Is this problem happening for when they post on a topic? Does the wrong username show as author?

If yes, its probably going to be a login problem which could have came from some customization the previous owner did. Check the header files or anything to see if any customizations may have occurred, this might have been removed in upgrades though.

If its not, its probably just an error on the "online now" part? Which is strange but could have been modded by the owner.

Thank you for the advise. I'm a newbie at this and not sure what I'm looking for in the
header. Could you give some suggestions?

The best guess really to see for any custom changes would be scrappy code if you know php? or comments made by the owner. Otherwise it can be really hard to notice changes.

You could.. but its risky, replace files like the header, footer, etc. with fresh files for a new installation but it could risk your forum if you dont know what your dealing with. I dont know SMF much so i'm just basing this on overall forums.

Hope it helps.

Hello is anyone out there?

Its very hard to define your problem as we dont have access to the forum or anything.

Why not keep the main database tables and have a fresh install keeping the theme or something? Its the most reliable method.
