Hi josher and welcome to Geeks to Go!

I recommend you print this advice. In safe mode you will not have this page available.

Download Pocket Killbox.
Unzip the files to a folder like c:\killbox\
Don't run the program, we'll do that later.

***

Download CleanUp!.
If the link doesn´t work, download it from here.
Don't run the program, we'll do that later.

***

Download ISTbar removal tool to your desktop.

***

Download EliteToolbar removal. Unzip the files to a convenient folder.

Reboot your machine in Safe Mode (just click onto F8 key the same moment the pc is starting, before the MS Windows flag screen) and run the EliteToolbar Remover, then click the "Kill Elite Toolbar" button and wait until it will finish its work.

***

Doubleclick the file fxistbar.exe and let it run.

***

To restore default settings in Internet Explorer it is necessary to perform the following actions:
a. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
b. Select Internet Options
c. Select the Programs tab
d. Click Reset Web Settings
e. Click OK
f. Exit Control Panel

***

Open HijackThis. Press 'scan'.
Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www./

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www./

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {FAA356E4-D317-42a6-AB41-A3021C6E7D52} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ASDPLUGIN] C:\WINDOWS\System32\uk_nm.exe -N

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [etbrun] C:\windows\system32\elitewvx32.exe

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://ny.contentmatch.net (HKLM)

some of these items may already be gone, due to the above taken steps

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

***

Find and doubleclick the file cleanup312.exe.

Go to option
Select ‘custom’
Put a check to:* Temp
* All users.
Press 'cleanup!'

Once it's done, decline to log off.

***

Run Killbox (doubleclick Killbox.exe).

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files in the box below, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\uk_nm.exe
C:\windows\system32\elitewvx32.exe

Let the system reboot.

This log looks clean.

Scan again using AdAware SE and Spybot S&D. Remove any item shown in red.

How are things now?

HAVE RUN NOADWARE AND SPYBOT AS YOU SUGGEST.

NOADWARE GAVE 24 CRITICAL ITEMS - 22 EBATES MONEYMAKER AND TWO OTHERS WHICH WERE COOKIES. tHESE i HAD SEEN BEFORE AND DELETED BUT THEY REAPPEARED ON REBOOT. aFTER THIS DELETE AND REBOOT THEY WERE GONE AND NO ADWARE WAS CLEAR

SPYBOT FOUND EIGHT ITEMS:-

ELITUM.ELITEBAR [2]
CALLINGHOME.BIZ [2]
DyfUCA.IbnternetOptimixer[2]
N-Case [2]

These could not bedeleted by Spybot on first run or reboot

Otherwise all the adverts and popups have gone and tghe machine seems faster which is fantastic

The remaining spybot items are descibed as low threat - do I need to do anything about these? Should I delete the items from the NoAdware quarentine as a routine?

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

You keep talking about NOADWARE. Please remove that program check this link to see why.

I've seen the items found by spybot a lot lately. But I have already been searching the Registry with a couple of users, and found nothing!

So I'd say, ignore them as long as there not causing any trouble.

Thank you Josher for your donation. It was a pleasure working with you.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
