recurring .tmp trojan virus!

:whistling: Hi, I'm currently running Symantec antivirus and it detects several trojans called ~56.tmp, ~EED.tmp and others. Ive found it only appears to show these results when I try to open a game in the program Steam. Its so frustrating and it wont let me in this game. Ive thought about just reinstalling this program but as it shows theirs a virus if i can just fix it i shouldnt need to. All help is appreciated. Thanks.

Go to the folder C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ and Right click on HijackThis.exe then choose Rename. Change it to newhj.exe (If you have a short cut on your desktop for HijackThis it will no longer work.) You can just run the file from here when needed or right click the newly renamed file and create a new shortcut and place it on your desktop.

Please download VundoFix.exe (by Atribune) to your Desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting. Run the Vudnofix at LEAST 3 times OR until you get a "No vundo found message"

  • Enter your username from this forum
  • Copy and paste the link to this thread
  • Browse for this filename: c:\windows\system32\scnmlsp.dll
  • In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file
  • Click on Send File
Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > Add/Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2RE Runtime Environment.... )
    It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
    Downloaded Applications
    Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
    Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
Let me look at the file I asked for and I'll have some additional instrunctions.

I've sent that file and mentioned you asked me to. I have a stong feeling its a Surf Control file used to obviously control our internet so it shouldnt be harmful.

As for the Java i removed two updates. Rebooted and downloaded the latest Java update from that link but when i run it i get the error "Warning:Failed to verify the authenticity of this certificate because there was an error parsing this certificate. No assertions can be made of the origin or validity of the code. Installing and running this code is not allowed." May this be a bug?

I've continued some research on these .tmp files and have found others having the same problem. Apparently the trojans are fake and Nortons will fix this error associated with Steam but I dont trust it. I'd still like to go ahead with cleaning my computer though. Thanks for your time.

Actually your log look good now..(although I'm still leary of the c:\windows\system32\scnmlsp.dll file; but it is NOT an infected file.

Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab.
Click the "Delete Cookies" button and then the "Delete Files" button next to it.
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content",
(You will have to re-enter passwords at websites that require them.)
Click OK

Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin:
Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report and a fresh HijackThis log
