Black screen at log-in?

When I log in and only when I log in my screen goes blank (black) and I can't do anything on my PC and have to turn off my PC by the mains and restart that way and then it works most of the time. I'm wondering what's going on, can someone help me please? Thanks.

Start by checking your monitors connections to the PC. If your computer has a video card take it out and clean the pins with a dry cloth. Reseat the video card and give it another shot. Let us know if it works.
