hi, sorry i don't have the full details, but if someone recognises how to help, that would be great.
on my dad's (honest!)...he's old...pc, he operates windows xp home edition.

when logging on to the net or outlook express an application error with something like 'windows/system or application error, or problem with writing memory...stuff like that apprears in a warning pop up. it then gives me...sorry my dad..60 seconds to close any programes, then shut down and re-boots pc.

i guess this is a virus which has infiltrated the pc since he last updated his virus definitions? but as we can not get logged on to download anything we are stuck.
any help??

ok, a bit more info to maybe help you out. after logging on to the net or email as i said, about a minute later a message appears with the following,

system shutdown
initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ISASS.EXE
terminated unexpectedly with the safety code-1073741819
system will now shut down and restart

Let's see if we can find the problem by seeing what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

I clicked on the link to Hijackthis, which opened a new window, so I logged in again and this took me to a page with several downloads (Mozilla, Lava etc), but could not find Hijackthis to commence download.
