I want to install openSuSe onto my computer although I only have one hard drive with Windows XP on it. I've read through a couple of topics, but I'm still weary on what to do. I sorta understand the partitioning thing so I'm clearing out some space on my hard drive. I guess I need some sort of step by step help. Thanks

openSUSE has an partitioner inside its installation program. Just pop in the openSUSE cd and boot from it. Then follow the on screen guide. You will need to make room for swap space and root space ("/"). It has been a while since I used SUSE but try reading through their docs.

One more thing. I have a 200GB hard drive, about how much room should I set aside for openSuSe?

thats entirely up to you. The least amount you need is 2GB. However, later you dont want to be wishing you had more space.

I would do the same thing ditto said but i dont think that u can change the windows partition size in the openSuSE installation.. I recommend downloading or installing a disc partitioner like PartitionMagic.... Then shrink the windows partition size down to a lower level than it is already... Make sure you have plenty of room for openSuSE on your hard drive. Its takes up more space than Windows XP does. You also want room on your hard drive on the linux side to store files and stuff.... Let us know if you need any help...

You will be fine with 200GB hard drive.

My Linux parition is 13Gb where as my XP is 62gb but Linux is my primary OS.

"Error occurred while creating the catalog.

Unknown error: unable to copy media directory
to /var/tmp/TmpDir.j4jPSa/MEDIA"

I've tried both DVD and CD images and burned them using PowerISO. What seems to be the problem?

Try and choose a different mirror site... If you downloaded them via http you might want to try and download them via ftp... You also might want to try burning them with something like Nero Burning ROM....

I didn't see if you posted that your up and running, but here's a few tips.
First get your windows xp all cleaned up (get rid of any trash or useless files), then defrag before doing the suse installation. When you start the Suse installation it will automatically re-partion your drive (including windows).
Before you accept the partition sizes for Sue Linux, write down on paper what it tells you as to location and size, in case you need a reference (also the installer will let you back up and punt).
The defaults should be fine, but as you said more is better. Last installation I had, had 5gigs for the Suse partition and I ran out of space there. So now I have 10 for Suse and 30 for /home. As to your problems downloading and burning, use and FTP program that supports auto reconnect and resume of broken transfers. Then when burning, burn AS SLOW AS POSSIBLE! Good luck!

Hi,

I am a Newbie to Linux and so not even able to install open SUSE 11.3 properly on
my laptop.

I am trying to install OpenSUSE 11.3, i have created a separate drive of
30GB for installation but i am getting this Warning screen which states that all the data and other partition will be formatted and erased. Now I have Windows 7 in my C: Drive. How do i avoid complete format?

Kindly help me out.
