I recently upgraded my CPU to a 3200+ with a 400MHz FSB, upgraded my (original version) NF7-S with a BIOS update, and plugged it in. When I set it to 3200+ mode, it showed an external clock speed of 200, and multiplier x11.
I think the RAM I have is 2700, but it doesn't like going faster than 200, so I set the FSB/RAM ratio to 6/3, and when I turned on, it got as far as looking for windows on the HDD then just showed a blank black screen.

Because of this, I'm now using it as a 2500+ (166MHz, x11, I think), and it works as well as my old 2400+ did.

Any ideas why 3200+ mode doesn't work ?

whats the CPU temp ?

200 should be right for a 400 FSB

does the pc start in safe mode ?

can you boot from a floppy to dos ? maybe Windows just hangs..
can you make sure it's not that?

Rico750 is right the 200 x 11 is the correct setting for your cpu making it run at 2200 mhz or 2.2 gig

Instead of changing the ratio set it back to what it was and change the ram clock to 166 but keep the fsb at 200.

Its most likely the ram is to slow thats why just setting 3200+ plus mode won't work you need to manually set the ram clock back to 333/166 speed. This would not accur if you had pc 3200 ram.

I would upgrade the ram to take full advantage of the new 3200+ cpu

Thanks - I managed to get as far as windows saying that a config file was missing or corrupt - presumably this means it will work fine if I fix/reformat ?

Yes, and that's a pain when it does that, there must be a way to back up the config files so this can be repaired without a format, anyone know?.

And Doby is spot on with his RAM upgrade advice, ram is cheaper than ever right now too. A couple of 512mb modules of slightly overclockable PC3200 would do nicely, even kingston "value ram" seems to work for this.

If you run the new ram in sync (same speed) with the cpu, and bump the FSB speed up a little, you will see a pretty hefty bandwidth increase that makes 3D apps run really smooth. Just monitor the cpu temp for a while if you see any significant increase, wind it back or find a cooling solution.

I'm running an XP2800+ thorton core at 182mhz (stock 166mhz) and it's giving me an XP rating of 3250+ with no measurable temperature increase with the boxed heatsink. The cpu is running at 2.35 ghz for nearly a year now with no problems.

Yeah - I seem to have lost my XP cd, so any way of doing this without a fix/reformat would be extremely welcome

I just orded 512MB from crucial.com, and hope to get some more soon, when I get a bit more free money

But seriously, It's a windows configuration file, I forget which one, and there might be more than one..... I think it would have to be backed up beforehand and you would have to add it back in to the system from a bootable disk / DOS prompt .... or slave the drive temporarily and add it from another windows session on a seperate hard drive.

I haven't experienced this overclocking nightmare side effect since installing Service Pack 2 on my systems..... but that may be coincidence only and not a guarantee.

I also have XP SP2 - I tried uninstalling the processor once but that caused a blank screen just before the "windows is loading" screen
