Yes, and that's a pain when it does that, there must be a way to back up the config files so this can be repaired without a format, anyone know?.
And Doby is spot on with his RAM upgrade advice, ram is cheaper than ever right now too. A couple of 512mb modules of slightly overclockable PC3200 would do nicely, even kingston "value ram" seems to work for this.
If you run the new ram in sync (same speed) with the cpu, and bump the FSB speed up a little, you will see a pretty hefty bandwidth increase that makes 3D apps run really smooth. Just monitor the cpu temp for a while if you see any significant increase, wind it back or find a cooling solution.
I'm running an XP2800+ thorton core at 182mhz (stock 166mhz) and it's giving me an XP rating of 3250+ with no measurable temperature increase with the boxed heatsink. The cpu is running at 2.35 ghz for nearly a year now with no problems.
