Hello,

I am using a Windows XP Home machine and having some issues with it.

When i started it up it went to a point before saying:
File is missing or corrupt: C:\Winnt\System32\Drivers\Pci.sys

which i fixed by following the resolution here -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319136

then, when i booted the next time, i got the error:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys

so i did the resolution steps here -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822800

and now when i start up the pc it goes to the screen that gives me the option for Safe Mode, Last Known Good, or Start Windows Normally.

i select any of the three, it goes like it will boot and then a blue screen flashes on the screen (too quick to read what it says on it) before the PC just restarts itself and does the same thing again... it will just loop and never boot to xp.

obviously something has gone wrong somewhere, and i am hoping i can resolve this issue without having to do a fresh installation of xp.

please help!

also, i tried running a repair installation and it gave me a whole bunch of files to be replaced... and then got to a point where it just said it couldnt continue.

does this sound like there is anything i can do to avoid a fresh install?

Hi hulud...

Bad RAM can give you all the errors you describe.

Download the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, create the disk (either floppy or bootable cd), and boot the machine with it. Run this tool for at least four complete passes. If you see any failures at all, you likely have a bad stick of RAM aboard.

I am going to give this a try right now and will report back my results

okay, i ran the diagnostic through 10 passes. there were no errors found so it doesnt appear that memory is the problem.

i have run scandisk and chkdsk and neither found any errors.

in my pc bios i checked the "pc health" page and have the following:

current cpu temp: 35c / 95f
current system temp: 25c / 77f
all voltages are right around the defaults

this issue seems to be resolved.

using recovery console... i copied the repair files from c:\windows\recovery and everything is booting correctly now, to the right desktop and settings. seems like there should have been more to it than that...
