First, I need you to disable the Microsoft Antispyware program as it could interfere with cleaning your system. To disable the program, follow the instructions below:
1.) Right click on the Microsoft Antispyware tray icon (a little red and yellow circle looking thing)
2.) Click on Security Agents Status (Enabled)
3.) Click on Disable Real-time Protection.

Then, I need you to download LSPFix from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm Disconnect from the Internet, close all Internet Explorer Windows, and run the program. Check the "I know what I'm doing" Button and remove all traces of APPTOPORT.dll (do NOT remove anything else!) Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.

No, I don't. But the file you just removed with LSPfix was associated with this program.

You might want to remove that program from your system. Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs - scroll down until you see something called

Bullet Proof Soft (or possibly BPS)

If it's there, remove it.

You may want to print these instructions before continuing.

First, I need you to right click on the desktop and go to New > Folder - click on it and name it whatever you want. Locate HiJackThis.exe on the desktop right click on it and go to "cut", then go into the folder you just made and click "paste". This is to ensure backups are saved and accessible.

(Make you disabled Microsoft Antispyware as indicated in my previous post before doing the following!)

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis and put a check next to the following items, if found, and click "FIX CHECKED":

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\Userinit.exe
O3 - Toolbar: SuperBar - {1646500C-7B00-4612-A5B7-FCA4FEA990DA} - C:\Program Files\_SUPERBAR\_SUPERBAR.dll (file missing)

Close HiJackThis.

Go into Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove programs and remove the following or any variant of, if found:

SuperBar (might say SuperBar IE plugin)

Exit add/remove programs.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new notepad file. Change the "save as" type to "All Files". Save it as Unreg.bat on your Desktop.

regsvr32 /u C:\Program Files\_SUPERBAR\_SUPERBAR.dll

Locate Unreg.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it.

Then using Windows Explorer, delete the following (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\_SUPERBAR (folder)
C:\WINDOWS\about.htm (file)
C:\Program Files\bulletproofsoft.com (folder)

NEXT:
Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.c...bee/hoster.zip. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

THEN:
Download, install, and run CleanUp!

FINALLY:
Run this online virus scan ActiveScan

Please copy the results from ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log. Let me know if you're still having problems.

Michelle,

When I tried to open up the Unreg.bat I wasn't able to, my computer said it couldn't find it? Should I disregard this and go on to the next parts with deleting the files in Win Explorer?

Thanks :tazz: Walter

If it couldn't find the file, that's a good thing - it means it's already gone :tazz:

Yep, please continue with the rest of the instructions.

Walter, I'm pasting your message in here so I can keep track of everything!

Michelle

Say I tried to go ahead and delete superbar, it wasn't to be found

Then I tried to delete BPS spyware which showed up but I recieved an error message that said "cannot delete AppToPort.dll access denied" The file was there as well as the read me file which I couldn't delete either. Let me know what you think, I would assume this is part of the problem. Thanks for you help.

Did you uninstall the BPS program through Add/Remove Programs?

Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter. Log-in as Administrator:

Be sure you're able to VIEW HIDDEN FILES

Delete the WHOLE folder (in bold) if found:
C:\Program Files\bulletproofsoft.com
C:\Program Files\_SUPERBAR

It's fine if you don't find the SuperBar folder!

Do you have the "itunes" program on your computer? If not, then you can just delete that.

Please post a new HiJackThis log to check it out again. :tazz:

How do you know from looking at my logs if there are programs that cause problems?

Awesome "Geeks" who train well ;)

You are very welcome, Walter! I'm glad I could help ;)

Congratulations you log is clean! Great job on the clean up :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.

Oh, one more thing! Don't forget to re-enable Microsoft Antispyware!
