desktop problem

One day i dont know what happened. Suddenly my desktop background went black so i went to the properties and tried to change it back but the menu where you select what background you want was greyed and wouldnt let me select any backgrounds, it would only let me change the color of it. I ran norton and did a disk cleanup and all of that but still it wont change. Does anyone know whats wrong and can anyone help me?
