Hi flcox1111,

Peer to Peer (P2P) programs enable you to connect with other computers to download files. These are often files such as music, games or movies to name a few. Using P2P programs is quite often the cause of computers becoming infected. It is not necessarily the P2P program that is infected but the file or files that are being downloaded that are. Then there also is the legal aspect of the sharing of certain files (ie. copyright).

Sure, a lot of the files that are downloaded are legitimate, but how do you know if it is or isn't. Just because the filename may indicate what you think that you are downloading, but what happens when the file isn't the song, game or movie you thought it was. I am sure that almost everyone who has used P2P programs has discovered at some point that what they download wasn't really the file that they expected.

Sometimes it's harmless, it just may be a case of the wrong filename. Other times you can get a lot more than what you bargined for. Many of the files that you think are safe when you download them can actually have viruses, trojans or malware of some type attached to or embedded into the file. So I pose the question, do you really know what you are downloading...?

I would recommend that you remove Limewire from your system or at least disable it from automatically starting when windows does.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Hi flcox1111,

Nothing in there.

Did you remove the entries in HijackThis that I asked you to in my last instructions?

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-us8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://srch-us8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-us8.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://srch-us8.hpwis.com/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://us8.hpwis.com/
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis (including any browser windows), then click Fix Checked.

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
    C:\Windows\ALCXMNTR.EXE

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Reboot the computer.

Now lets look a little deeper.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO

  • If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Please download Rootkit Revealer (link is at the very bottom of the page)
  • Unzip it to your desktop.
  • Open the rootkitrevealer folder and double-click rootkitrevealer.exe
  • Click the Scan button (bottom right)
  • It may take a while to scan (don't do anything while it's running)
  • When it's done, go up to File > Save. Choose to save it to your desktop.
  • Open rootkitrevealer.txt on your desktop and copy the entire contents and paste them here
Create an Uninstall list
  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.
Please post the requested logs together with a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is behaving.

Thanks.

Hi flcox1111,

The Silent Runners log doesn't appear to be correct, it should have shown a lot more than what you posted.

Run the Silent Runner's script again by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.

Please make sure that you let the script completely finish before copying the results.

Lets try an alternative Rootkit detector.

Download GMER from here:
http://www.gmer.net/files.php

Unzip it to the desktop.

Open the program and click on the Rootkit tab.
Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
Click on Scan.
When the scan has run click Copy and paste the results (if any) into this thread.

Please post the requested logs in your next reply.

Thanks.

Thank you again for your assistance.

Hi flcox1111,

You will need to print out a copy of these instructions, or save them to NotePad and put a shortcut to the file on the desktop so that you can refer to while you complete this procedure.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Be sure to update AVG Anti-Spyware to the latest definition files.
  • Open AVG Anti-Spyware
  • On top of the main screen click the Update icon.
  • Then click on Manual Update button.
The update will start and the progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(When complete the status area at the top will display ("Update successful" or "No Update Available")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG Anti-Spyware.

Close AVG Anti-Spyware. We will run the scan shortly.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

Boot into Safe Mode: You can do this by restarting your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, Open AVG Anti-Spyware.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Please note: You must use Internet Explorer for this as it uses an ActiveX component.

This scan may take a while to complete, so please be patient and let it finish.

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer

  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:

  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Please post the requested logs together with a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how your system is now behaving.

Thanks.

Hi flcox1111,

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - Startup: DING!.lnk = C:\Program Files\Southwest Airlines\Ding\Ding.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis (including any browser windows), then click Fix Checked.

Boot into Safe Mode: You can do this by restarting your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe on your desktop that you downloaded previously to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\hp\bin\KillWind.exe
    C:\Program Files\bfgtoolbar
    C:\Program Files\Southwest Airlines\Ding

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

If your computer did not restart then please Boot back into Normal Windows.

You need to reset you restore points to clear a couple of entries there.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

I would now like to see another log from Kaspersky to make sure that we have got those bad files.

I have listed below a couple of items that you can remove in HijackThis to help speed up your system. I have colour coded each them so that you can see what they relate to.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O3 - Toolbar: hp toolkit - {B2847E28-5D7D-4DEB-8B67-05D28BCF79F5} - C:\HP\EXPLOREBAR\HPTOOLKT.DLL
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Share-to-Web Namespace Daemon] c:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Quicken Scheduled Updates.lnk = C:\Program Files\Quicken\bagent.exe

Optional, your choice to keep if you it use frequently.

Unneeded HP Toolbar that uses up resources

These programs are not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to.

HP application that allows users to upload scanned images to webpages
Quicken automatic updater

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis (including any browser windows), then click Fix Checked.

Reboot the computer

I notice that you have AVG Anti-Spyware and SUPERAntiSpyware both running on your system. While it is good to have these types of programs running they do take up a lot of resources when both have their respective Real Time scanners enabled. Could you please disable the Real Time scanning of one of those programs. This should help with the sluggishness of your system.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is behaving after performing the above instructions.

Thanks.
