My computer (A Dell Dimension 2300 desktop) has two CD-ROM drives, and the upper drive (drive D) does not work. It opens, but it does not ever detect CDs that have been loaded.

1: Was it ever working well?

2: Does it show in My Computer?

3: Switch the computer off and open the side cover of the computer. Check that the cables sit tight in place.

If it was working well, and if it shows up in My Computer, and if the cables are tight then you probably have to replace it because of non-fuctional laser.
