Operating system Windows XP fully up to dates patches BEFORE the attack

My virus software threw an alert sayin that my computer was infected with Trojan.exploit.131. In the activity log it tried several times to remove it but said it was unable.
I carried out the following:
Ran Norton in normal mode. It found nothing.
Deleted all the temporary internet files
Ran it in safe star up mode. It found nothing.
As per your article I downloaded and ran - ATF cleaner, AVG anti spyware, Super antispyware, Panda Active Scan. All the above found nothing.

My question is this - If Norton detected the virus and could not remove it where has it gone? Could deleting the temporary internet files, between the first and second attempt with Norton have removed it?

I have since installed Zonelabs firewall, Spyware Guard and Spyware blaster.

Many Thanks

Hello Paul, my name is Rorschach and I'll be helping you with your problems.

Trojan.exploit.131 seems to be a vulnerability affecting Microsoft Animated Cursor (ANI) file parsers, and not an actual
trojan on your PC. To fix this, please go update Windows here
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Please run HijackThis, click "Do a system scan only" and check this entry in bold

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

Close all windows except for HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

So in your next reply please post the following : the two DSS texts in full, and say how your PC is running now and if you are having any problems.

Hello Rorschach

Thank you for finding the time to help me - I really appreciate it.

I have carried out all you instructions. The computer is running fine - it was before. I just wanted to know whether the Trojan had actually been removed. Norton was unable to remove it when it detected it, and then it didn't show when I scanned it in Norton. Moreover, it didn't show up in any of the other programmes I ran - ATF Cleaner, AVG antis-Spyware, Super anti spyware and Panda active scan: if it had been removed surely it would have shown up in the logs of these various scans?

In the process of running Deckards System Scanner Norton through up the following alert:
MALICIOUS SCRIPT ALERT
OBJECT FILE SYSTEM OBJECT
ACTIVITY GET FOLDER
FILE C:\DOCUME-1\PAULM....\INKREAD.VBS

Norton promptem to stop the script but I ran it guessing that it was part of the scan. Was this incorrect? Should I run Deckards again and quarantine this script with Norton?

Again many thanks for your help - you are providing a vital service.

As per your instructions I have pasted the two reports below:

Deckard's System Scanner v20070804.61
Extra logfile - please post this as an attachment with your post.

Hello Paul

I just wanted to know whether the Trojan had actually been removed. Norton was unable to remove it when it detected it, and then it didn't show when I scanned it in Norton.

What Norton detected was a vulnerability on your PC that trojans can use to attack your computer. However there was no actual trojan on your PC, so you don't have anything to worry about. Just make sure you keep Windows updated so vulnerabilities like that can get fixed.

Norton promptem to stop the script but I ran it guessing that it was part of the scan. Was this incorrect? Should I run Deckards again and quarantine this script with Norton?

That script was related to DSS, sometimes legitimate programs get flagged as "malware" when they are safe. So good job on letting DSS run properly.

Your logs look good! You have nothing to worry about Paul. We need to just do a few small things

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Remove the following

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Hello Rorschach

I have carried out all the actions as requested leaving - and will now have a look at Mozilla. One question - if Norton only detected a vulnerability why did it say that my computer was infected with Trojan.exploit.131?

Many Thanks again. It is reassuring to know that if you are the victim of this type of crime - because that's what it is - there is somewhere that you can turn for help.

Hello Paul

One question - if Norton only detected a vulnerability why did it say that my computer was infected with Trojan.exploit.131?

What Norton is saying is that you have an exploit that some trojans can use, however they have phrased it in a confusing way. They should have said that your PC was vulnerable to the Trojan.exploit.131, which is true, and that you didn't have an infection. The way they have phrased it means that people think they are infected with a trojan when they aren't actually. Exploits like this happen quite often, some malware uses the old versions of java to attack your PC these days, so having old versions of java on your PC are quite similar to what Norton was reporting about the trojan.exploit.131

I hope that helps you understand the problem. I was getting a bit tongue tied explaining it :whistling:
Your PC is clean from malware, so you have nothing to worry about. Just remember to keep Windows updated.

It is reassuring to know that if you are the victim of this type of crime - because that's what it is - there is somewhere that you can turn for help.

Oh yes the infections these days are quite serious. You have trojans stealing credit card info and personal information used for online banking and other stuff that can be harmful to a user. It is very helpful having sites like these and others where people help fight the good fight

I hope that I helped put your mind to ease, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Hello Rorschach

Yes, it is not clear from the Norton alert that you aren't infected. Thanks for clarifying that.

All the best
