It actually might be malware of some sort, because that should'nt be happening.... Do a spyware check or any kind of check to make sure. Or it could be, because of you have so much "stuff on your computer and you might need to clean it out. Or even try to get a new computer if you get one, get anti spyware, antivirus, etc... Installed immeditaly.

I've tried all the obvious stuff. I've had McAfee installed since the gitgo, and have recently run several malware checks with other tools. All have reported nothing. I haven't knowingly installed more "stuff" either.

I used to have some long delays and they were, in fact, caused by multiple errors on my hard drive. It eventually died altogether.
If you look in eventvwr, there should be errors recorded there.
Start/Run/eventvwr
Or you could run a chkdisk.
double click "my computer"
right click on drive in question
click on "properties"
click on "tools" tab
click on "check now"

Time to use your "runbox" to clean your computer,
(all these steps are done with the run box then)
deleting the prefetch files
-----------------------------
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: prefetch
- press: enter
(the prefetch folder opens)
- press: ctrl + a
(select all is the same)
- press: shift + del
(deletes without prompt)
disc clean up
---------------
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons:winkey + r
- paste: cleanmgr.exe
- choose drive(normally C: )
- press: enter
(this process can take a long time)
checkdisk
------------

- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r

a few other ideas,
first, I reinstall my system about once a year, yes I know that it is a lot of work what with the backing up and finding/reinstalling the programs again, the drivers, etc., but my harddrive could die on me and then I would be in exactly the same situation anyway so it both a test my backup plan and also a test of myself, however, if you have a paid up protection I would wait till that runs out and before renewing it reinstall the system.
sometimes I bootup in safemode just to see the difference between boot to post times, gives me an idea of the what it is like when nothing is loading as in normal boot.
I recommend placing a hjt log on the malware removal forum here, just for a quick look over.
I suggest keeping some empty space in the harddrive, it gets sluggish when the harddrive is full.

Did the chkdsk and the other stuff. Still awful slow. Computer is a Dell 8250, pentium 4, 2.67 GHz, 512 MB RAM. Probably the memory is the issue, bit I'm reluctant to shell our any cash if that's not the root cause. Computer was fine up until a few months ago.
