This can be caused by a missing codec for the video you're trying to play. A codec is basically a bunch of files that tells Media Player how to decode a video and put it on the screen. Files can be encoded in any one of a couple of dozen if not more codecs, so usually if you can't play a certain file it's encoded in a fashion that the player can't yet understand.
