i have been having some problems with multimedia on my pc. that includes playing videos in Firefox as well as on the computer. whenever i try to play the videos, the computer would slow down to a crawl and not show any video playing, but if i do a control + alt + delete, which brings my computer to a prompt where it asks to lock computer, task manager, change password, shutdown, etc, then it will play the audio to the video, but just that.

let me know what specs you need, but i am running xp pro, sp2 with Norton internet security 07, and my computer is clean, except for the usual tracking cookies, minuscule malware and spyware, but that is it, no viruses or trojans, etc.

any video being played anywhere, whether it is through windows media, quicktime, media player classic, winamp video, through firefox online videos on almost any website, just anywhere causes the computer to be real slow and use 100% cpu.

*UPDATE*

I ran SFC /SCANNOW with my windows xp pro cd in and had it do a repair as needed, but it has not fixed the problem with videos slowing down my computer.

What are the videos you are trying to play.

What are they encoded in.

some of the videos i am trying to play are recorded video from a live tv tuner card, or dvd videos, or some home movies that have been given to me. i am not sure what they are encoded in. if you could help me figure that out.

What format are the files recorded from the tv tuner. What extention do they end in? The movies that were given to you are they just DVD movies?

the files from the tv tuner create the file in .ssm, then are converted to .WMV. the movies that were given to me are regular dvd format. the same format as dvd movies come in, such as the movie Saving Private Ryan. if i put that movie in my machine and light up windows media player classic, the computer will be snail slow while trying to play the video, but the video will play, so i dont thinks it is a compatibility issue. the video format could also be .avi, .divx, .mpg, .mpeg, .qt, or .mov format.

thanks for your help. this has been a problem for quite a while, and i dont remember when it started, but when it started i just ignored it for a while because i didnt need the video capability and i had more important things to do, but now i do and i am trying to fix the problem without a reformat.

(1) I see in your profile that you are using 2 gigabytes of RAM, is that still current on this machine?

(2) When did this issue start? Has it always been this way?

(3) How you noticed unusually high CPU usage according to the Task Manager recently?

(4) Is the whole system slower, or just when you play movies and such?

(5) Are you running a lot of unnecessary programs such as instant messengers, mail applications, etc. while attempting to play these videos?

1) Yes, that is still correct. I still have 2 GB of RAM on my computer.

2) I don't remember when the issue started, but my computer did work at first, then after a while the issue came about.

3) I noticed that when I played the videos, the computer would be very unresponsive to the mouse and I would have to do a control alt delete to get task manager open, which is when I noticed 100% CPU. Win Media Player, or any other media player I have running would take between 80 - 90% with outlook taking 4% and Firefox taking 3% system taking 2 percent and the last 1% would be spread out amongst the other processes running.

4) The system is only slow when I play movies.

5) I am not running anything more than the average person would be running. The stuff I have running is minimal CPU intensive programs. I have AIM, Firefox 2.0.0.X, sometimes Winamp, Outlook 2007. I have about 25 things in the task bar of programs, such as outlook, java, Norton Internet Security, Beyond TV, LogMeIn, PcAnywhere, and a lot of smaller apps. they are mainly there because I like to see whats running in the task bar.
