Yesterday, I went through the recommended steps before posting this log. I'm still having trouble, so I guess I'm missing something.
The main symptom I'm still having is that when I (or other users on my Dell Inspiron 8600) attempt to open our Web-accessible e-mail, there is a very slow, or no response when we try to open an individual message. My Inbox appears on my screen, and all appears normal, but I can't access individual messages.

Help!

Thanks...
KevinR57

Hello Kevinr57 and welcome to Geeks to Go.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the Internet, or my instructions!

There are a few malware items on your PC that may be responsible for your problems. Now if you are ready, let’s get fixing!

You are running HijackThis from the Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Ad-aware SE Personal
CWShredder (the download icon is on the right-hand side of the page)
CCleaner

Your HJT log shows that you either have two Trojans, or have had, and some of the remnants are remaining. To be on the safe side, I would recommend that you visit Trend Housecall for an online scan.

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and thenOK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Please install Ad-Aware. Configure, and run a FULL Ad-Aware scan using the following configuration below
  • Check for Update
  • Click Start
  • Select Perform Full System Scan and hit Next to let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
  • It will list malware files and registry keys. Click Next.
  • Under the Critical Objects tab, rightclick in the list, choose Select All, then Next.
  • It will ask for verification of checked items-. Choose OK.
  • Close Ad-Aware, Shut down and reboot your system.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - (no file)
O1 - Hosts: 64.91.255.87 www.dcsresearch.com
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1C044AAD-7955-4cbd-8175-501A165C4E5D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B8B55274-0F9A-41E5-9067-A3539BD9E860} - C:\WINDOWS\Web\PRINTERS\docad.dll
O4 - Startup: Webshots.lnk = C:\Program Files\Webshots\Launcher.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: docad - C:\WINDOWS\Web\PRINTERS\docad.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: req - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

Huntbar

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete these files (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\Webshots\Launcher.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat
C:\WINDOWS\Web\PRINTERS\docad.dll

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

and we will take another look.

Well now...
We sure do thank you for your help!!
The requested files are pasted below.

Everything appears to be OK now. :) ;)
And my wife says :) :tazz: ;)

FYI - I went through your procedure twice. Here's why I did, maybe it wasn't necessary??
First time through, I had trouble in Windows Explorer deleting the "req.dat" and docad.dll". The error had to do with Access Denied, blah, blah, blah...
In (Safe Mode With Command Prompt), I changed owners, attributes, etc. on those 2 files until I could delete them.
They were stubborn little buggers! Anyway...
Once they were deleted, I continued as per your instructions.
Cleaned up with CClean, Ran the fresh HJT scan...And there were still hints of the 2 files in the scan! Only now, the line ended with "(file missing)".
I went to bed.
Today, my wife and I went through your procedures again. The initial HJT scan still showed the "req.dat" and "docad.dll" with the "(file missing)" at the end of the lines.
Ran HJT Fix on those 3, continued with your procedures, didn't find anything in Safe Mode that needed removing, etc...
End Results are !!!!!!!!!!! :)
I can actually open my individual e-mails now!!!

Files below Sir. Thank You!

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes, having two or more antivirus systems would be really bad as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated. ;)
