Hello, I have this HP desktop. I have no idea what happened to it. It boots with no beeps then shows that hd is detected and then moves into the black screen with the blinking cursor on the top left. I can't go into BIOS unless I remove the cmos battery. Then I save all settings and restart it - computer goes into the blinking cursor screen again.
Tried:
-replacing RAM
-replacing power supply
-resetting the CMOS
-trying to boot from BOOT CD
-replacing the hard drive
-removing all extra peripherals

No effect whatsoever. Please advise on the next steps. Should I replace the motherboard?

what you should try doing is a system restore, or xp repair on the xp cd. if you have the HP restore disc that should have come with your computer, then put it in the cd drive. you might have to go into the bios and set it to boot from cd rom drive first before it will boot. but that should fix the problem. if it doesn't than let me know.

Let the force be with you
